How to use colour to make your home a happy one

To say that I love plants is an understatement. I guess it was always going to be in my blood given I have a Dutch mother and her love of pot plants, like her fellow countrymen knows no bounds. If there was space in our house it was quickly filled with yet another plant.

And when it comes to plants we are definitely having somewhat of a renaissance. Couple that with falling back in love with colour and well, that definitely makes me one very happy colourful plant loving girl! So imagine my sheer delight when I was asked to collaborate with Dutch Always Kalanchoe, I was filled with colourful plant loving joy.

Colour is everywhere right now

In the world of interiors, colour is everywhere right now. We know colour can have a huge impact on our happiness and emotional wellbeing. At home, where we are most comfortable and can truly be ourselves, being surround by colours you love, you’ll instantly feel positive and at ease.

Colour choice is a very personal thing. Each of us are drawn to different colours for different reasons. Whilst it’s great for inspiration, don’t be tempted to paint your living room a bright blue just because it’s the latest Instagram trend, use colours that you connect with and express how you want to feel, whether that’s bright, bold and energised or relaxed, soothed and nurtured.

Colourful plants

Colourful plants are an easy way to inject colour into your home. Not only can plants make your home healthier – they have been proven to improve air quality, reduce tiredness and boost concentration – but the right colours can also be an instant mood booster.

Whether it’s purple to create a sense of peace in your favourite sunny corner, orange for a bright social kitchen, or red to give your home office an energy boost, plants are great way to inject small doses of colour to stimulate positivity at the right moments. Plus, they are affordable, so you can pick and choose colours depending on how you want to feel one day to the next!

Flowering succulents such as Kalanchoes are a great choice – not only do they come in a huge array of colours, but they are easy to care for, undemanding, and will bloom for 10 weeks with minimal watering, perfect for busy lives. They will also live happily outside on balconies or terraces during the summer months, making them perfect for ‘inside outside’ living.

I have a lot of friends who confess to having no green fingers whatsoever and have resorted to plastic, yes plastic plants! If this you, these are the easiest plants to care for and they will also greet you with a big colourful hello!

I recently both two (an orange and yellow one) from the local supermarket for £1.50 each for a friend who absolutely adored them. What a bargain!

Here are some of my colour top tips to add some colour and plants into your home:

  • Yellow is a welcoming colour – a cheery smile – so a yellow front door or hanging plants in a porch will instantly brighten your mood as soon as you arrive home. For those who find yellow too bold, try cream
  • Purple is great for quiet contemplation and reflection, making it a good colour choice for a favourite chair in a sunny corner of a living room or balcony to create a sense of inner peace
  • Red is the colour equivalent of a double espresso shot – it will give an instant energy boost to a home office or work corner
  • Orange elicits fun and playfulness to help you feel light-hearted and upbeat. It also encourages social conversation, making it a great accent colour in a kitchen, the social hub of the home

What colours are you going to bring indoors?

Until then, wishing you a colourful day!
