WORLD EARTH DAY – Biophilic Design & Sustainability

This Saturday, 22nd April is WORLD EARTH DAY.
EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organiser of Earth Day, are carrying on the theme from last year which is “Invest in Our Planet”.
The aim of Earth Day is to demonstrate support for the protection of the environment. It was first held on the 22nd of April, 1970, and now, over 50 years later, events are coordinated on a global scale and includes over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
On Earth Day last year I was invited by expert lighting company Phos, who head up Light Tribe, to join a panel discussion along with Dr Shelley James, consultant, speaker, curator and WELL Advisor and Marcus Steffan, lighting Designer, author, university lecturer and champion of diversity in the workplace.
The topic we discussed “Biophilic Design and Sustainability”, is as relevant today as it was 12 months ago which is why I’m resharing this with you for this year’s World Earth Day.
In our in-depth 55 minute discussion we focused on topics such as:
- Why is local, sustainable, community-driven manufacturing such an important part of biophilic design?
- What’s our relationship with colour in the natural world and how can we use this to improve the built environment? Is it just the colour green?
- What positive outcomes can sustainable, biophilic design have for humans in the built environment?
- What role does artificial lighting play in biophilic design and how might you apply it?
