On the Colour Couch with colour lover Kim Baeten-Schouten

Little Book of Colour. On the colour couch with Kim Baeten-Schouten.

I often find myself going down the colourful rabbit hole that is Instagram. The joy of this is finding colour lovers from around the world. And Kim Baeten-Schouten from The Netherlands describes herself as “a beautician who loves to style her life in colour”.

What is your earliest colour memory?

That my mum would take me to the Oilily shop as a little girl, and Laura Ashley, so many colourful clothes and fabrics, I loved it.

What does colour mean to you?

Everything, I can’t imagine a life without! I think it would really make me unhappy. But Luckily I don’t know how it feels!

Do you have a favourite colour or a colour that you find yourself constantly drawn to? And why?

As a little girl (of course) i loved pink! But it always stayed like that. I just adore all shades of pink. I really have to tell myself no pink Kim! Because I want to use all colours not just one. I don’t have a Bucket list, but if I would it would be to use allllll colours….;)-

But really I have lots of fav colours, i love orange yellow and pink as a combi you see that a lot in our home…

Do you have a colour that you least like? And why?

I don’t like grey, and brown! Like I really would never pick that. It doesn’t give me a happy feeling.

What do you love most about working with colour?

That there are sooo many beautiful colours to explore, you always find new shades! It never stops.

What do you think your life would be like without colour?

Like I said I can’t imagine life without colour, I always loved colour. It makes me happy.

I think about colours every day. Even my kids do!

What’s your favourite colour story?

I went to Tanger last year, Morocco.  All the beautiful colours it was so impressive and beautiful. I was there with a friend. It was like a dream. When I came home I immediately wanted to paint at home:) and I did!

Were you ever afraid or wary of colour? And what did you do to overcome this?

I always loved colour, prints and patterns even as a little girl I would combinate everything.

Maybe in puberty, I wore more black and I wanted more dark colours in my room. But that was just for a little while.

Color is just me! Everybody knows me as colourful Kim.

Do you have a favourite colour place that you visit (or have visited)? [a publicly accessible place]

I love going to Nature parcs and garden centres to look at all the different and pretty colourful flowers.

If you could pick any colour and give it a name, what would that be?

Orange, I would call it Smiles. I don’t know what it is but if I see it makes me want to smile. Such a beautiful colour.

For anyone afraid of colour what would your number 1 piece of advice be?

People ask me which colour should I use, I’m afraid to use colour in my home.

Start with looking through your closet, what’s your fav top, or what’s your fav thing to eat or a spice or herb!

Take that to the store and pick the colour that comes closest. Such a feel good moment when you paint.

Which colourful person do you most admire and would love me to interview for the On the Colour Couch series?

I admire rowans_rainbow, she makes the coolest murals!!!!!

I just love that I’ve found another lover of orange. Along with Marianne Shillingford, I’m gathering quite the Orange posse! And I love Kim’s idea of taking the colours with you when you go shopping even if that is a spice. This will make it so much easier for you to colour match as often the colour we have in our mind isn’t the colour of the item.

Love this it’s a great format for an colourful interview
As coincidence has it I was working on a new colours for a luxury range in Dulux ireland a few months ago and my wild card was an orange !

      Hi Cora,
Apologies to only be replying to your comment so late. It got lost in the spam. Pleased to hear you love the colour couch as a format. You’ll see our friend Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director Dulux has also been interviewed.

Given orange is my favourite colour and now your wild card, let’s see if it makes a return!

      Hope Venice was fun!
